It looks like Apple may be transitioning from Google Maps to their own product, built off of acquisitions over the past three years. It shouldn't surprise anyone. And what a great way to do it. Adding these "ugly", beta maps into an app that only uses them for decoration and not to actually find your way around a city is brilliant. Plenty of time to work out the kinks before the next major iOS version, presumably in September. The Verge is reporting on the matter, and added an interesting twist to the whole thing. OpenStreetMap is claiming these maps are theirs, and outdated versions at that.
